For many people the concept of stem cell research conjures up great hope and fear. The promise of stem cell research is counterbalanced by ethical and religious objections to embryo and stem cell research. The Centre acknowledges the importance of ethical debate and the necessary ethics approval required by various organisations prior to commencing a project. The ASCC separates the debate from the approval process, but recognises they are not independent of each other. The Centre has a role to play in continuing to communicate with the general public in order to set realistic expectations of stem cell research, provide factual evidence and discussion on the progress of research in Australia and to encourage public debate and education on the issue. The Centre seeks to create opportunities to engage the public in the discourse as well as be an active participant in established events around the country that serve to inform the community. |
