Research Funding

The ASCC works in partnership with researchers across the country to deliver research excellence and translation to outcomes in the area of stem cell biology.

In order to achieve this partnership, the ASCC provides research funding for Research Projects either within their Platforms or Programs. The ASCC is registered with DIISR as a Category 1 funding agency.  All research applications are subjected to independent assessment for significance, approach, feasibility, competitive advantage, strategic fit, commercial potential and excellence.

The following types of funding are provided:

Fundamental Stem Cell Research

Research in this area seeks to address major questions in basic adult and embryonic stem cell biology that will potentially provide the framework for the development of therapeutic stem cell products and related applications. Funding in this area also provides the ASCC with the potential to capture valuable foundation intellectual property relating to basic stem cell biology.

Therapeutic Stem Cell Research

The present therapeutic focus of the ASCC is in the area of Haematology, with the objective to develop stem cell technologies that will ultimately either provide blood products or lead to the treatment of human haematological diseases.  Research in this area involves both adult and embryonic stem cells and related technologies. Project funding related to this Therapeutic Program is currently available.

Monitoring of potential opportunities for expansion of the ASCC’s Therapeutic Programs will occur on an on-going basis and will be largely determined by the outcomes of research generated within the area of Fundamental Stem Cell Research.  Should new Therapeutic Programs arise, Project funding would be made available in those areas either via the ‘Expression of Interest’ or ‘Call for Applications’ route (see Apply for Funding)

Enabling technologies

The ASCC recognises that access to technology and infrastructure play an integral role in achieving research outcomes within the area of stem cell research. Funding is therefore available to stakeholder institutions for the provision of access to advanced molecular, biochemical and cellular technologies and infrastructure for ASCC-funded researchers.
